Macomb County Jail Truth
This is the very first step in your journey throughout this dreadful establishment. Booking. Just like in the movies and TV, the deputies at macomb County Jail "book you".
What this means is they take your mug shot, fingerprint you and in some cases take your DNA. A relatively simple process that every inmate must endure. I suggest smiling in your mugshot. They hate that. (: |
Don't sound so bad right? WRONG. During the booking process you are kept in the below pictured room with as many other inmates as they decide to cram in there with you.

Anywhere from a few hours to several days. I was personally kept in the all concrete booking cell for 3 straight days.
No mat, no blanket no comforts in the least. The most comfort I had was a roll of toilet paper for a pillow. The gentlemen in the picture to the left have blankets at least but I want you to imagine this same group trying to sleep at night. It is as bad as you can imagine. Actually it is most likely WORSE than you can imagine. Imagine spending DAYS crammed like sardines in the tiny room you see to the left with wall to wall men. 90% of, have, for some reason, ZERO hygiene habits. |
Why they call them "day rooms" is a mystery because you don't see the light of day and there isn't room to breath. Once you have spent enough time in booking they generally send you to what are called Day Rooms A or B. Imagine a long and damp hallway lined with graffiti filled cells. Graffiti that is 25 years old.
I personally recalled a message written on a wall that said "Jim was here April 1990" or another message that was huge on the ceiling that said "East Side for Life! 1995" These rooms are dark, filthy and depressing as hell.
They generally keep you in this section of the jail for several days. Its at this point you think things cant get much worse. Sadly, they are about to get much, much worse.

Sadly, the "mental health" section of Macomb County Jail is where the recent tragedy of the man who tragically and uselessly died under the watchful eye of the macomb county jail deputies in the mental health division could and should have been easily been prevented. This site clearly explains why such measures need to be in place to prevent such tragedies in the future.
In the event you find yourself in a yellow jail uniform, you can rest assured you are headed for the "high observation" or the"suicide watch" section of Macomb County Jail. MCJ Mental Health Section is one of the hardest places because you have zero idea what time it is, rarely have other inmates to talk to, have no windows and you cannot tell if it is day or night. WHY WOULD YOU BE PLACED IN THIS SECTION? When I personally arrived in Macomb County Jail I was handed a pair or yellow fatigues! WHAT WAS THIS? Later I was very unhappy to find that meant I was to be placed in the "Mental Health" or "High Observation" section. Of course my immediate question was WHY? Come to find out the answer was far from easy to get from the deputies (let us be clear these are NOT police officers but more like security guards who have pretty heavy responsibilities) These guards worked the mental health section and seemed to enjoy taunting and belittling the inmates there. I remembered a man who truly needed help and was crying like a 3 year old for his mother for hours. |

I witnessed the in-compassionate deputies belittling him and laughing at this clearly disturbed 25 year old man crying for his mother. In fact, out of all the deputies I encountered in my stay there, the deputies in charged of the people who were supposed to be potentially in the worst mental trouble, the mentally ill, the suicidal, the mentally unstable etc, essentially the people who needed the MOST compassion, received the absolute least.
The deputies seemed to be most insensitive towards them. Kicking the doors during breakfast and belittling them in every fashion imaginable is what I personally witnessed and it made me sick to my stomach. I will never forget what I saw that day.
WAYS TO GET ON AND AVOID THE MENTAL HEALTH SECTION
* Telling the nurse you are suicidal will get you placed in mental health faster than you can say it.
* Having a history of mental illness can get you placed there
* A relative can call the jail worried that you might be suicidal thus causing you to be thrown in high observation (as in my case) A pretty fair deal if you think about it.
* Having a history of being in a psych hospital can also get you placed in the mental health section of Macomb County Jail.

The picture below shows D-Block in all its splendor. What it doesn't show is how the room with roughly 15 to 30 inmates goes unaddressed 95% of the time. I witnessed everything from drug usage to fights. All unaddressed.
Although I heard recently that there have been renovations, D-Block is literally is like a zoo. Or better yet, a zoo in a third world country like Afghanistan or Iraq. There is virtually ZERO observation by the deps (except the once an hour or two walkthrough that the inmates KNOW is coming). It probably is the scariest place for people coming to jail for the first time.
D Block has its share of decades old graffiti as well. The picture doesn't do it the slightest bit of justice. This is the nastiest place in MCJ by far. Tales of bed bugs, head lice and scabies are abundant. How MCJ gets away with housing humans in D block is far beyond me but they still do. |
D Block was the original Macomb County jail decades ago (from the 1950s I have heard). I don't have the actual numbers but I have heard from many people in Macomb County Jail that D-Block and the bars around it as well as the tables you see date back to the 1950s without ANY major changes! By the look of it, You can believe it.
After leaving D-Block after a week or two you will be sent up to the towers. What floor depends on your classification. Inmates are classified 1 to 8. One being the lowest security. The floors are arranged like so...

Again, what your classification is will determine what floor you end up on. You are assigned a random roommate 90% of the time. You have a 10% chance of getting a single man cell. The towers are filthy, cold and make you feel like you are stuck on an old abandoned space station. Looking out the 3 inch window certainly makes things much worse. They lock you in at 10 pm and the sound of that door locking is painful all in itself.

Macomb County Jail Deaths
At this point in your journey you will get a classification number that ranges from 1 to 8. 1 being the lowest security threat. If you are classified a 4 or under you have a strong chance of being placed in the annex. The Macomb County Jail Annex is a giant room with exactly 100 men in it. Now, if you HAD to choose a place to be, the Annex would be it. Why? It is newer and far cleaner. There are carpeted floors and you don't feel like you are actually in jail. It feels more like a real shitty summer camp. It generally consists of young guys and old men. They also have televisions on the wall. It still is Macomb County Jail so it still is hell. Regardless, it is the best place in hell in my opinion.
